I’ve discovered a few more benefits to book traps. First of all you can sometimes get an unscheduled nap if you set out a comfy book trap.
Secondly, you can use book traps to divert your children to different parts of the house. I needed to clean the boy’s room but I knew I wouldn’t have much success if I just asked them to stay out of their room so instead I set up a book trap at the dining room table.
I’ve noticed that this sort of technique works well in parenting. No joke. If I keep one step ahead of my kids we can have a very smooth day. For example I can set up a game on my bed and just leave it there. The boys will come upon it and play the game. Then I can wash the dishes. If I anticipate when they’ll be bored with that game I can set up something else somewhere else in the house. This is especially useful if there is a day that I want to stay inside and catch up on housework.

Hey! I recognize that book that Alex is reading. Cat and Chicken or is it Chicken and Cat? I just took it out from our library the other day. I’ve been reading up a storm and writing little ‘reviews’ on them for my own reference. I’m surprised at how many books I read that I DON’T like but that was one I really enjoyed. Looks like Alex did too. Funny, because I thought it was a soothing, quiet story and given his reaction I think I was right!
The “book trap” “game trap” idea is so fabulous!! I’ve got to start using it. Oh, wait I fogort to have kids…I’ll have to try it out with Edie and Augie.
Seriously, Awesome!
LOVE this idea, saw it on daddytypes, and am going to link to it from my blog. Absolute genius.
