ugly sweaters

I was thinking ahead to the holiday season and thinking it would be really funny to get all my co-workers to wear ugly Christmas sweaters to work at the library.  Ya know — like those ugly Christmas sweater parties.  I’d wear a Nordic chic one.  Not too pretty.  Not too ugly.  Just right.

While doing my very important ugly Christmas sweater research I was reminded of the Cosby sweater .  I started poking around the internet and found the designer who created the one-of-a-kind sweaters for Cosby.  His name is Koos Van Den Akker.  He’s dutch, obviously.  You have to watch this little video about him.  He is hilarious! I just love him. He says about his own designs — “It is a very thin line between something that is absolutely awful and something of genius.”  Ha.  I love that. That makes me smile because so often when I’m thrifting with my friend Kirsten I will ask her — “Is this fabulous or awful?”  Right or wrong I like stuff that teeters on the edge.

yes, totally understand about the fine line between beauty and hiddeous. kitsch often walks that line – but has a sense of its own ridiculousness. i love kitsch!

recovergirl, Thanks so much for sharing this great video interview with Koos Van Den Akker. What a fascinating character! (We ugly sweater fans owe lot to Koos and Bill Cosby.)
